Der Tod, so sagt man, der soll ein Wiener sein. Und sein Leibgericht ist vermutlich eine fette Burenwurst. Doch was hat das mit dem vor 10 Jahren verstorbenen Lewis Allen Reed zu tun? Der war bekanntlich New Yorker, und auf seiner berühmtesten Platte prangt prominent eine kunstvoll gestaltete Banane. Aber New York und Wien: das sind zwei Schwestern im Geiste, nobel und morbide zugleich, strahlend und finster, einerseits von einem Speedball aus Heroin und Kokain angetrieben, andererseits von viel zu vielen weißen Spritzern.

Genug der Kulturklischees. Wo der große Songwriter Reed seiner Stadt Denkmäler voll fahriger, abseitiger Schönheit hinterlassen hat setzte die Wiener Band Die Buben im Pelz an. Genauer gesagt übersetzte sie 2015 das Album 'The Velvet Underground & Nico' ins Deutsche. Oder, besser gesagt, in ein theatralisch gefärbtes Wienerisch.
Und zeichnete so kongenial versiffte Bilder der fabelhaft schönen, wunderbar abgründigen Donaumetropole. Die erfolgreiche Hommage bekommt nun einen Nachfolger spendiert.

'Verwandler' nimmt nun - erraten Sie es? - Bezug auf die nach dem Velvet Underground-Klassiker wohl ikonischste Platte aus dem umfangreichen Katalog Lou Reeds, 'Transformer' von 1972. Zwar ist es diesmal keine Eins-zu-eins-Übertragung des Originalalbums, aber die neun gelungenen Coverversionen sind erneut eine hervorragend gelungene Würdigung der Werke des Meisters. In der Buben-Version von 'Walk On The Wild Side' flaniert man in breitestem österreichischen Slang durch Pinkafeld und den Wiener Donaukanal entlang, von Außenseiter-Gefühlen und dem Drang nach Transformation getrieben. Candy hasst auch in Wien ihren Körper und sucht Erlösung. Selbstverständlich pickt man auch hier fest aneinander, mit UHU als Bindemittel. Und kurz bevor uns der Gevatter mit brennender Tschick zwischen den Zähnen zu sich holt, wenn Wellen der Angst durch unseren Körper rasen, steht die letztgültige Weisheit: 'Olles wird guat wannst nix mehr wüst …‘

New York and Vienna are sisters in spirit, noble and morbid at the same time, radiant and sinister. One is driven by a speedball of heroin and cocaine, the other by white wine galore. While Death, as they say, is a Viennese (and his favorite dish is probably a fat wiener sausage), New Yorks most famous sons name is Lewis Allen Reed, and his most famous record prominently features an artfully designed banana.

Deeply impressed by the great songwriter Reed and his mindblowing musical monuments full of erratic off-kilter beauty, the Viennese band Die Buben im Pelz set to work. In 2015, they translated the milestone 'The Velvet Underground & Nico' into German. Or, rather, into a theatrically colored Viennese, drawing congenially filthy pictures of the fabulously beautiful, wonderfully abysmal Danube metropolis. And this very successful homage now gets a successor.

'Verwandler' refers to the album 'Transformer' from 1972, probably the most iconic record from Lou Reed's extensive catalog after leaving the Velvet Underground. Although 'Verwandler' is not a one-to-one transfer of the original album, this album is once again a worthy tribute to the master's works. In the Buben version of 'Walk On The Wild Side', the broadest Austrian slang guides you along Vienna's Danube Canal, drifting like an outsider with the urge to transform. And unsurprisingly Candy hates her body in Vienna, too, but keeps looking for ultimate wisdom. Which is heralded by the grim reaper, who summons us with a cigarette butt between his stained teeth: 'Everything will be fine once you stop wanting'.
