about

What comes to your mind when you think of Austrian popular music of the late 1950s and early 1960s? Johann Strauss? - no wait, this was the late 1850s ..... The von Trapp Family? The cheesy world of Schlagermusik? Yodelling? Or could there have also been something different, maybe even something really wild?

You bet there was, and Viennese music journalist, DJ and subcultural historian Al Bird Sputnik has spent many years to find all these awesome vinyl treasures you can hear on this first 20-track-collection of our Schnitzelbeat-series.

As with many good things that come unexpected, you might not want to believe just how great this stuff really is, but don´t you cheer up when a teenage Werner Gavac yells his lecherous "I love you, Baby" into the mike of a vintage "Voice-O-Graph"-recording booth, leaving a first, noisy track of original Austrian Rock-N-Roll in the late 1950s?

This one just kicks off a glitzy revue of extraordinary genre music that you never would have thought to be existent in this jolly little alpine country. You´re about to hear later softporn-actor Frank Roberts sing of booze and brawl in Cuban whorehouses ("Maloja"). You´ll learn how Die 4 Bambis (world famous for their pretentious über-schmaltz "Melancholie") are getting lost in "Inka City" - a killer exotica-track that we permit ourselves to present in a rare metal acetate version that was produced in a quantity of only one (in words: 1) sample.

There is Surfbeat that´s on a par with the Tornadoes or Challengers (The Austrian Evergreens, "Olymp"), sex-and-crime ballads with a harsh R-N-B-backing (The Hubbubs, "Nachts in Chicago") and a Doo-Wop-world-hit that unfortunately no one has ever heard of before (Franco Runa, "Komm little Girl"). And of course there are some crude Garage bands that play on the some level as the best UK and US combos (Hannes Patek & The Vienna Beatles, "Jeanny, Jeanny, Jeanny"; Jerry & The Cannons, "Rosalie").

You will hear singer Ferry Graf tell us that the true Heartbreak Hotel is located at the dusty end of a nameless Viennese suburb ("Hotel zur Einsamkeit"). And did you know that in the late 1950s Austria was home of a formidable Hillbilly entertainer named Rockie Jackson? This guy sings "Baby let´s play house" no worse than the King of Rock-N-Roll himself (whom, by the way, Rockie has shaken hands with one sunny day).

Genre collectors (Rock-N-Roll, Exotica, Beat, Garage Punk) and friends of incredibly strange music will find an awesome collection here, restored to best possible sound quality and accompanied by an extensive booklet full of great stories and pictures.
