Le Charmant Rouge came together in January 1996 in Burgenland, Austria’s easternmost and smallest province. The group formed spontaneously from regional bands of an isolated music scene.

They passionately pursued experimental and boundary-breaking music. US experimental rock bands like Mr. Bungle or U.S. Maple; japanese noise rock groups like Zeni Geva, Boredoms or Melt-Banana; German Krautrock of the 1970s (Can, Neu!, Harmonia, Faust): each left deep impressions and lasting traces. Contemporary Austrian music, from the early avant-garde post-industrial heavy performers of Fuckhead to the experimental electronics of Mego label releases, were heard and studied.

The band's early work was dominated by intricate disharmony, noise and meandering formal languages. Over time the group turned to a more harmonic and repetitive song format, as this re-issue of their first album Winzer (“Vintner” or “Winemaker”) illustrates.

At the time of its recording the band played unencumbered and free of fixed ideas, but soon realized how musical preferences affected the working process. The mix of individual bias was understood as a challenge. In the studio all ideas and allusions to musical orientations were boiled down like a pot of goulash.

When asked if Winzer was retro, radio journalist Fritz Ostermayer observed:
"Le Charmant Rouge sometimes sounds retro in its individual components, but as a whole it is not. Just as every vintage has its own character, it still has to be measured against older vintages.”
Winzer was released on December 2, 2002 on the Viennese independent label Karate Joe. For its 20th birthday it gives its vinyl debut, including a detailed band history.

Le Charmant Rouge erschienen erstmals im Jänner 1996 im Burgenland, dem östlichsten und kleinsten Bundesland Österreichs, auf der Bildfläche. Die Gruppe gründete sich spontan aus regional agierenden Bands einer weitgehend isolierten Musikszene.

Leidenschaftlich verfolgte man experimentelle und grenzgehende Musik. Beeinflusst war man von US-amerikanischen Experimental-Rockbands, wie Mr. Bungle oder U.S. Maple, sowie japanischen Noise-Rock-Gruppen wie Zeni Geva, Boredoms und Melt-Banana. Maßgebliche Vertreter des deutschen Krautrock der 1970er Jahre (Can, Neu!, Harmonia, Faust) hinterließen ebenso tiefe Spuren.

Auch die zeitgenössische österreichische Musik-Szene wurde gehört und studiert: die Avantgarde-Post-Industrial-Heavy-Performer von Fuckhead, so wie auch die experimentelle Elektronik aus dem Hause Mego.

In der Anfangsphase der Band herrschten vertrackte Disharmonien, Noise und mäandernde Formensprachen vor. Mit der Zeit fand die Gruppe zum einem deutlich harmonischeren Sound, wie das hier als Wiederveröffentlichung vorliegende erste Album der Band zeigt.

Bei den Aufnahmen zu Winzer erkannten die Künstler ziemlich bald, wie sich musikalische Präferenzen im Arbeitsprozess bemerkbar machten. Die Erkenntnis offensichtlich ziemlich biased zu sein, begriff man jedoch als Herausforderung. Alle Ideen und Anspielungen an musikalische Orientierungen wurden im Studio wie in einem Topf Gulasch eingekocht und weiter verdichtet.

Auf die folgerichtige Frage, ob denn Winzer nun Retro sei, stellte der Radio-Journalist Fritz Ostermayer bei der Vorstellung des Albums fest:
„Le Charmant Rouge klingen in ihren Einzelbestandteilen manchmal Retro, sind es als Ganzes aber nicht. So wie eben jeder Weinjahrgang seinen eigenen Charakter hat und trotzdem sich an älteren Jahrgängen messen lassen muss.“

Winzer erschien erstmals am 2. Dezember 2002 auf Wiener Independent Label Karate Joe. Nun bekommt das beeindruckende, hypnotische Album zum 20. Geburtstag eine längst fällige Neuauflage spendiert: erstmals als Vinylschallplatte, inklusive einer detaillierten Geschichte der Band.
