about

„Get to your feet and dance (on a rollercoaster ride of committed pop)“

Sometimes songs serve as a lifeline, sometimes they’re an emergency exit from the panic room called life. With their new album, the Linz based quartet Tonfabrik gives us eleven escape routes to dance to. Just like laughter, happiness and friendship are parts of life, sadness, anger and death are, too. And Tonfabrik, which translates as Soundfactory, have found a compellling way to pour all of that into songs. And yes, it’s fresh and direct, like the catchy political agitpop of a Billy Bragg or the playful social criticism of the Housemartins have been.

If the debut „Wohlerzogen“ (2018) was primarily a cracking political statement in the name of solidarity and tolerance, songwriter Christoph Leitner-Kastenhuber adds darker tones on this selftitled followup. His stories and observations comment on a time out of joint, chant against the new lust for the old right-wing swing, mourn the disappearance of loved ones and uphold fond memories of them, like that of watching the first game of football on dads shoulders.

By cutting the arrangement down to the absolutely necessary, the songs increase in intensity and give drummer Friedolin Baumann additional space to conjure the right grooves. Dance in the name of progress it is, but in a shrewd, almost rogue style. "We don't want a piece of the cake, we want the whole bakery“. A good move! Tonfabrik serve us 11 hot delicacies with a cracking crust and many different flavors. For sure, you’ll ask for more.
