about

„Originellster Austropop seit Attwenger.” (Falter)

----------
Wigledy-wiggle, the idyll, a taradiddle

The EP Menschen Tiere Tanzmusik (man animals dance music) is the product of intesive collaboration between Laokoongruppe and the Viennese Electro Duet Kilo, who have also been giving joint live concerts for quite some time now. After Laokoongruppe‘s debut album Walzerkönig, this now is another remarkable piece of new, Austrian Pop music, sustained by the respective talents of the artists involved: Florian Bogner‘s and Markus Urban‘s ability to merge dance music with live electronic and free improvisation into complex, yet always enjoyable sound mesh, and Laokoongruppe‘s (aka Karl Schwamberger‘s) gift of creating right-on-the-nose songs with catchy tunes and unerring lyrics.

The outcome is a record that will not only do well in the clubs, but one will also be able to enjoy alone, at home, in order to get your share of melancholic goose pimples and show off your enhanced high school knowledge. „We have gained all this, we are not going ter loose it“. Menschen Tiere Tanzmusic starts off with the lie of a successful life. Based on a piece by Heinrich Heine also the rest of the album revolves around the idyll and the lie hidden within, as well als the futile strive to keep yourself upright in the face of an always collapsing, repelling reality. The attempt to stuff the holes through which reality forces its way into fabulous ideals is bound to fail, just like the disco dancers attempt of ignoring the sunrise.

Laokoongruppe X Kilo maneuver through the deeply moved border area of the attempted and naturally failed, the wanted and challenged ideal. Over and over again there is an attempt to describe and even produce pure beauty, sweet harmony. The harmonies end up blurred and shaken, sounds collapse and break off, there‘s delicate spanner in the songs‘ works, stumbling beats. Yet the music succeeds in creating the idyl of the pretty song - after all: Menschen Tiere Tanzmusic is a Pop record.

But then again there still is this voice, which probably would like to be a crooner‘s, but is in fact feebly exploring, never too sure of itself, always a shaky business, and the shrill, ambiguous lyrics that constantly underline and mend the cracks of the belief in that true life within the wrong, just to rip them open again.
